Lean on me

There are lots of great songs about friendships, love, helping, and triumph out here. But of all of these, my favorite resides in an old classic: “Lean on Me”

Why do I love such an old, 70s soul piece so much? Unlike many other songs I hear, “Lean on Me” describes a more real world. It describes me, and who I want to be.

I enjoy assisting others, that much is undeniable. From the small matters of life to grandiose philosophical discussions, I love making someone else’s day a little bit brighter. But what the song lyrics hint at here really strikes me:

“For it won’t be long
Till I’m gonna need
Somebody to lean on”

Nobody is perfect in the world, least of all myself. I know that I had my good days and my bad days! But experiencing this only makes me more sensitive towards others, it means that I can empathize when you’ve just had a crappy day. That is why I offer my shoulder to lean on.

Let’s note two things here: perhaps a key word is “lean” here. I’m definitely not qualified, and probably not prepared, to assist you every step of the way. But I can do my best to get you started! My words are not wise nor my actions smooth. Sometimes I can be as lost as you are! But I’ll always try I be there for a place to rest at, to find solace in.

Also, if you are helping others with the expectation that they pay you back, you’re probably doing it wrong. For me, it should be more of a, “I know how much it sucks right now, but I can help you get to tomorrow” type of deal. Otherwise, your words will sound hollow and you may cause even more harm!

I feel blessed thy people are willing to confide in me, and moreso that I can trust in them. I hope that everyone can build stronger relationships and know that “there’s always tomorrow.”
